Record as many details of the accident as
possible. Write down the date, time and location of the accident and if
appropriate, note the weather conditions and what footwear you were wearing.
Keep damaged clothes or property for future use in your claim and do not
dispose if it until your are advised to do so by your solicitor. |
 |
Get the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all
the witnesses to your accident and ask them if they would be prepared to assist
in determining what happened in your case. |
 |
If the police attended the scene of the accident, get
details of the officer in the case, the police station where he/she is based
and a reference number. |
 |
Make a note of who caused the accident (including
their name, address and telephone number). |
 |
If at all possible, obtain details of the insurance
company for the person or organisation that you believe was responsible for
your accident. |
 |
Take photographs of the accident scene. Sometimes it
can be sensible (for example in pavement tripping cases) to place a copy of the
day's newspaper in the scene if at all possible, so that there can be no
suggestion that the photos were taken before the day of your accident. |
 |
If you've suffered a trip or a slip, or been involved
in a road traffic accident, make a sketch plan of the accident scene. |
 |
If you've suffered injuries, make sure that you seek
appropriate medical care. You might consult your GP or local hospital accident
and emergency department to report your injuries and make a record of the
injuries you've sustained. Get a reference number from any accident and
emergency department that you attend. If your injuries were not serious enough
to warrant immediate medical attention, ensure that photographs of your
injuries are taken (again put the day's newspaper in the frame). |
 |
Keep a detailed record of any travelling or other
financial expenses incurred as a result of your accident. |
